Great Yarmouth Borough Council update: Demolition has taken place this morning, Saturday 6 August, to make the site at the former Regent Road Indoor Market and Regent Superbowl structurally safe by removing some masonry, and to permit the fire crew to access the building to damp down at ground level.
Damping down will continue throughout the weekend with the fire appliance returning every few hours.
After expert opinion provided this morning, a need has been identified to clear asbestos containing material from the site, and to secure broken windows on properties opposite. A clean-up crew wearing protective gear are starting to remove the debris and another team have started to board up windows. The aim is to decrease the cordoned-off area so that a narrow walk-way to reconnect Regent Road for pedestrians can be created as soon as possible.
A cordoned-off area will remain in place around the site until further evaluation takes place on Monday.
Residents will not be able to access their properties from the front if the front of the building is within the cordoned off area until further notice. Access from the rear may be possible. Residents who are unable to access their property and who require emergency accommodation should contact 01493 846140 for assistance. Local residents in the immediate vicinity are still advised to keep windows and doors closed.
Power has been restored to all businesses on Regent Road. Businesses without power should contact UK Power Networks on 0800 316 3105. For reasons of safety, unfortunately businesses within the cordoned-off area on Regent Road are unable to open until further notice. We would ask that those businesses affected contact the council on 01493 846431.
